Negative Thinking
What to do when your negative thinking patterns cause you pain?
We all have times in life when we feel the effects of our negative thinking. For some people this is just a one off passing experience, like when you’re about to give a speech and the voice of self-doubt comes alive. Or it may be you’re about to ask someone on a date or prepare yourself for going out, and you begin to hear a whole barrage of negative self-talk in your mind.
Some people have these negative voices active almost 24/7. I have seen the pain this causes people as they try to continue living life as if everything is fine, putting on a brave face. But on the inside there is a different story, a painful truth.
Some people seem outwardly confident, yet inwardly they live with fear. Perhaps they seem outwardly strong, but inside their thinking is of worry and anxiety.
And it’s not just emotional and mental pain. I have also helped clients with headaches or back pain, sometimes quite severe too, who don’t have any underlying pathology. Yet they have so much stress in life, and often the stress is mental or emotional in origin.
This may not seem a new or original thought. Everyone knows that stress causes problems. And most of our stress comes from our mind, our thinking.
But is simple positive thinking the answer?
I don’t really know what positive thinking is. If it’s just wishful thinking and therefore ignoring reality, this will only cause bigger problems. If it’s seeing things as better than they are, this will keep you stuck in a world of pain, and often have you unaware of why you are in this pattern. If positive thinking is saying affirmations that you don’t believe: good luck.
I very rarely see anyone who has been in a ‘bad’ place who has shifted it with just their thinking alone. Often when people shift their thinking, it does help, but it helps only for a moment. You see just a temporary change, then they find themselves back in their old thinking patterns again.
I am not saying your thinking is not important, because it certainly is. What I want people to understand is two things: 1) It is very hard to change your thinking with even more thinking, as Einstein said so perfectly: "No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it"; and 2) Your thinking is massively affected by your physiology, and by working with the body you can access a different kind of thinking by changing your physiology - this is so important to anyone who wants to improve their well-being, health or happiness in life.
When I work with people to improve their well-being it is important for me to assess where their pain is coming from, as so many people get caught up in their thinking. These people always make the biggest breakthroughs when they make the connection between their mind and their body.
If you are living life with negative thinking that is causing you pain in day to day life, it will never change until you do something about it. You need to be pro-active, and you probably need to do more than just change your thinking into being more positive. Yes, you need to adapt and evolve some of your thinking patterns, but you will only be able to hold these new thoughts if you have the correct body structure in place - we help you do this at Inspiring Wellness.
